Acid Mothers Temple - Electric Love Machine
As I've stated previously, probably many times, I love bands who can make a great noise. It doesn't matter too much what the lyrics are like or the song structure is, as long as at any given moment it sounds great. It's probably why I get on comparatively well with drone music, that whole hippy mystical "being in the moment" shit.

Talking of hippy shit, here's some Acid Mothers Temple. You have to admire them, because not only are they ludicrously prolific, with something like 40 albums over the last 10 years, they also have some of the best song titles ever. With tracks suck as Starless and Bible Black Sabbath and A Bamboo is as Close as Miss Marsh to Marshmallow and an album called New Geocentric World of Acid Mothers Temple, they wear their influences very openly. All of which is quite strange, because while at any given moment Acid Mothers Temple might sound like prog or psych or space rock, they clearly are nothing of the sort. Their all-out sonic assault follows completely different rules and is far more akin to a jazz blowout than anything in the rock canon.

Here's one of their most song-like pieces, Electric Love Machine. This is the version which was released in 2002 as a 7" single. Don't let the opening guitar riff in the first few seconds fool you; you are NOT in for a straightforward experience here. The sound is dense, multi-layered and drips with electric ecstasy as the rest of the band do put on a light show for guitarist Kawabata Makoto to hide behind.

While the themes of structure versus free playing are up in the air here, it's as good a time as any to mention that over the next few weeks I'll be compiling a musical alphabet. [info]beaupepys suggested that it might be amusing; I hope it proves to be so.
