The Velvet Underground - Heroin
I'm running late, so just a quick update today. Here's one you all know and love.
They don't come much better than the Velvet Underground's Heroin. Taken from their classic Velvet Underground & Nico album, it's a classic of the delayed build. Reed's vocals are understated yet urgent, Mo Tucker's drums are flat and empty. It's as if the song is constantly promising a glorious explosion of sound. What it eventually delivers is the release of Cale's droning viola into a caterwauling, discordant scrawl. It's a masterpiece of disappointment.
