Pierre Henry & Michel Colombier - Psyché Rock
The 1960s. Ballet. Electronics. Psychedelia. Tubular bells. Professor Hubert Farnsworth. Seemingly an unlikely bunch, what they all have in common is today's track, Psyché Rock by Pierre Henry and Michel Colombier. Colombier was a musical polyglot, equally at home working with Stephane Grapelli, Petula Clark, Herb Alpert or Madonna. He was astoundingly prolific and comes across as the consummate musical professional. Henry, of course, was something else entirely; his background was experimental, electro-acoustic and concrete music.

Psyché Rock is the best of both worlds. Written for the ballet Messe pour le temps présent in 1967, it's since gone on to much greater fame as the theme music to Futurama. One thing Colombier and Henry had in common was that they were both concerned with musical shapes, with audio sculpture. Consequently, Psyché Rock sounds completely, absolutely great. It all fits together so well. This one is an absolute treat.

The Futurama theme was a "homage" to this great tune, the composer admitted as much. Not a bad one either...

LJ's like any other blogging platform in that what you do with it is entirely up to you. I know that it portrays itself as a community, but in the end it's just software. You can blog anywhere.
