Bill Frisell - Tales from the Far Side
Since the 1990s Bill Frisell has indulged in film music. It started with a few Buster Keaton shorts and, like all vices, has progressed inexorably, leading to the inevitable Hollywood movie. But, I hear you ask, isn't this all fairly harmless, and even fun? How little you know. Dark are the roads that lead to the palaces of film, and darker still is the destination. There are cows.

Which brings me neatly to one of his earlier film projects, the score to the TV adaptation of Gary Larson's The Far Side. It's from his 1996 release, Bill Frisell Quartet. This isn't your usual quartet. The line-up of electric guitar, violin, trumpet and trombone turns out to be capable of some enormous sounds. Not just the cows, but the bears, the dogs, the cavemen and the snakes. Tales From the Far Side sounds pretty good to me.
