Bert Jansch - The Wheel
Bert Jansch is a name still spoken in reverence by a generation of guitar players. In 1964 he hitched down to London and borrowed a guitar to record an album that totally blew the lid off what was acceptable (or even possible). Clearly it was folk music, but it was folk that had never been heard before. Jansch wasn't iconoclastic purely for the sake of iconoclasm. His music was clearly rooted in the folk tradition, but it fell from his fingertips with a power and a density that demanded new ways of playing to contain it.
Here's The Wheel from his 1965 release, It Don't Bother Me. The Wheel is a small and perfect revolution. That, I say, that's a joke, son. Sit up an pay attention.
