DJ Shadow - Building Steam with a Grain of Salt
Some classic records live off their reputations. Take Endtroducing..., the 1996 debut album by DJ Shadow: it's widely believed to be the first record made entirely out of samples. A completely inaccurate belief, of course, but a widespread one nonetheless. It's also widely believed to be completely brilliant, and on this point I have to concur. This is an ace record.

Here's Building Steam with a Grain of Salt, a paean to the power of music itself. You can hear the crackle of vinyl, and the huge warmth of the bass and piano as '70s low-rent funk meets '90s hip-hop. The warmth of this music is the key; while this sort of audio archaeology could be viewed in a clinical light, Shadow clearly adores the sounds he's working with. The music, as the man says, is definitely running through him. Essential.

This is an ace record.

Couldn't agree more...tis a stunning album! But you have my intrigue now...which album/albums prior to it were made entirely of samples? It's even in Guiness Book Of Records as the first :oS

I was thinking of the series of Plunderphonics releases by John Oswald. Plunderphonics (1989) and Rubaiyat were never officially released, and indeed the master tapes of the former were destroyed by the Canadian copyright authority, but Plexure and Greyfolded both saw release in the early '90s. Despite being made entirely of samples of other music, you could argue that some of these aren't the same thing at all, and are actually more like remixes. But Plexure, made from over 1,000 pieces of source music, is definitely of the same ilk. It sounds nothing like Endtroducing..., mind you.

In fact "Endtroducing" is not made entirely of samples. It contains some original vocals on "Why Hip-Hop Sucks in '96" and "Midnight in a Perfect World", doesn't it?
