Gnarls Barkley - Crazy @ 33rpm
I was delighted at the response to the recently posted Crazy on You @ 33rpm, and thought we should have more of the same. It's difficult to find the right source material, however. You need a high voice, a rich sound and a certain unidentifiable something. It was [info]beaupepys that came up with the inspired suggestion that I try it with Gnarls Barkley's classic Crazy, and it worked a treat.

It needed something more, though. I loaded the song into Audacity, emphasised the retro pretence with a nice sample of some vinyl noise, and slowed that sucker right down. Just the thing for a song that seldom, if ever, was found on any physical media. I'm rather pleased with the concept, and am delighted to report that it also sounds great.

A treat, indeed! I couldn't stop grinning. It's so bizarre, it put a hook in my brain like the original... nice job.

Well I liked it.

I reckon we should get a group blog together just for posting records at the wrong speed.

I just tried Cheri's "Murphy's Law" at 33, and it sounded astonishingly creepy...

(I like it at at the "right" speed too.

Not quite as much of a home run as the Heart song. I really think '70s rock responds the best to being slowed down. Maybe it's my own preference.

Anyways, I agree that the Heart song worked better, but this one got me thinking that "One Nation Under a Groove" and a lot of other P-Funk songs sound a bit like they're being played too fast and have the sort of dramatic structure that this one lacks (though they're also kind of long already)...and, hmmm....Meatloaf?...of course, if you start doing this too much it's going to look like a desperate cry for help.
