Laibach - Leben Heisst Leben
If you were listening to pop music in the '80s, chances are you were unlucky enough to catch something called Life Is Life. It was rather like chickenpox, only more virulent. A vapid, bombastic piece of happily poisonous nonsense. If it wasn't so carelessly done, you could almost accuse the band behind it, Opus, of satirical intent. It typified everything that was lazy and wrong about euro-rock.
Something had to be done, and that something turned out to be Laibach. The Slovenian pranksters recorded their own version of it. It didn't take much in the way of re-imagining to turn it into Leben Heisst Leben. Moving the music out of the stadium and into the middle of the Nuremberg rallies was a deliciously sharp comment on the emptyheadedness of rock anthems. At least, that was always my take on it. It's full to bursting with bombast and discord and fake crowd noise. Wonderful.
