Laibach - Leben Heisst Leben
If you were listening to pop music in the '80s, chances are you were unlucky enough to catch something called Life Is Life. It was rather like chickenpox, only more virulent. A vapid, bombastic piece of happily poisonous nonsense. If it wasn't so carelessly done, you could almost accuse the band behind it, Opus, of satirical intent. It typified everything that was lazy and wrong about euro-rock.

Something had to be done, and that something turned out to be Laibach. The Slovenian pranksters recorded their own version of it. It didn't take much in the way of re-imagining to turn it into Leben Heisst Leben. Moving the music out of the stadium and into the middle of the Nuremberg rallies was a deliciously sharp comment on the emptyheadedness of rock anthems. At least, that was always my take on it. It's full to bursting with bombast and discord and fake crowd noise. Wonderful.

Oooh, it's been years since I listened to any Laibach.

I liked them, but when it came to that really really harsh, dark, black-as-black-humour-can-get, I always preferred Foetus. "The inscription on my tombstone reads "Wish You Were Here"" may be my favourite lyric of all time...

Laibach in Concert...

I loved that album when it came out despite the fact that most passerbys thought I was listening to Hitler's house band. When they played The Lift in Cleveland, word got out to the Slovenian community that a band from their homeland was playing. So, sprinkled in with the goths, punks and new wavers were senior citizens and children (dressed in traditional garb). They brought bells to ring as applause. The band, with two snare drummers front and center, was a force to be reckoned with. But, the novelty soon wore off and I had moved on by the time Laibach covered the entire Let It Be album. Still Opus Dei is an amazing album. Geburt Einer Nation, How The West Was Won and The Great Seal are other classic tracks from that platter.

I think they are worth sticking with... the Let It Be record is not great, but the more recent WAT album is a great collection of stomping industrial music, mostly originals rather than covers. They are even more of a force to be reckoned with live since they acquired two young ladies who play drums and contribute backing vocals.
