Thurston Moore - Lonesome
Fans of guitar noise should need no introduction to the world of Thurston Moore. I count myself as such, and yet his latest release, Sensitive/Lethal is rather too much for me to take. I should have been prepared for this. One of the worst gigs I've ever been to was a dismal night out with Sonic Youth at Barrowlands in Glasgow. It's possible that what was happening on stage was actually pretty good, but by the time it had been filtered through the atrocious PA, you'd never have known. Either way, Moore has never been one to shy away from making an almighty din, and that's certainly what he does here.
Bracketed by the album's two main tracks, Sensitive and Lethal, each in excess of twenty minutes long, sits the rather more digestible Lonesome. Now, as much of the sound on this record allegedly comes from an acoustic guitar (believe me, you would never know), I'm guessing that this is something of a tribute to Hank Williams. What Mr. Williams would have thought of this racket, I have no idea. To be quite honest, I'm not entirely sure what I think of this racket either. But new music by Thurston Moore is always interesting, right? Right?
