The Kronos Quartet - Purple Haze
Lest Doklands start to earn a reputation as the obituary focussed mp3 blog, it's time to return to business as normal. Or whatever passes for normal here, anyway. For now, that will have to include a radical string quartet playing a Jimi Hendrix track.

The Kronos Quartet burst onto the scene in the mid '80s, with an attention-grabbing second album. It featured music by Philip Glass, Conlon Nancarrow and other slightly countercultural composers, and finished with a real party piece. They played Hendrix's Purple Haze with a savage wit and obvious relish. Although they somehow manage to capture his stylistic nuances, it's not just a homage to his playing style. Rather it's a fantastic interpretation of a bit of classic rock. And don't be put off by those two frightful words sitting next to each other. Hendrix was never anywhere near the mainstream, it rocks, and it's a bona fide classic. Time to reclaim those words for the music that deserves them.

Not sure if you watch TV or not, but something rather similar to this (a Purple Haze cover but with a more medieval feel - I suspect crumhorns and the like are involved) is currently being used by the BBC to trail their Inside The Medieval Mind season.

String quartet covers can be interesting. Some things work really well (we have a fine cover of Coldplay's "Yellow"). And then there's things like Hayseed Dixie doing Kashmir, or even the Ukelele Orchestra of Great Britain doing Anarchy In The UK...

I have a lot of time for The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain. Although it's great to hear them do covers, sometimes it feels as if they're trying just a bit too hard. Much as I love what they did with the Stones' Satisfaction, I think they're better the further they stray from parody.

Mr McFall's Chamber are one of those acts that I've always wanted to hear more of. What little I've heard certainly seems to suggest that they make some fantastic sounds.
