Lou Reed - Last Great American Whale
Time for something a little more mainstream. Last Great American Whale comes from his 1989 album, New York. He's rejoined by Mo Tucker on percussion on this quiet, bitter, allegorical fable.

I'm one of those despicable people who rarely pay too much attention to lyrics. I'm told that I'm missing the point, and I reply that I'm more into music than I am into songs. But with the minimal, swaying accompaniment to Last Great American Whale, there really isn't much else to listen to other than the steady meter of Reed's voice. Even then, I'm the sort who hears the sounds rather than the words, but there's enough poetry here to catch even my attention. It's one of those tracks that has quietly become a favourite of mine over the years, without me ever noticing how or why. Critical awareness: it's overrated.

mainstream maybe but this is one of THE best tracks on the album (and thanks for the reminder that I've been listening to this album for nearly 20 years :)). If you want more angry poetic lyricism, try Oh My God by Michael Franti & Spearhead - was listening to this yesterday and it immediately reminded me of Last Great American Whale.

Don't worry. Within a year or so, there will be albums that I've been listening to for 30 years. If I'm still music blogging, I'll have to do something to commemorate The Fall's Grotesque (After The Gramme).
