Portishead - We Carry On
Here at Doklands we pride ourselves on our complete lack of timing. Portishead's Third was leaked months ago, and we were all over it like necrophiliacs at a road traffic accident. "Holy crap," we thought, "this is good shit, its cold skin pale as alabaster." But for all that some pop music is an ephemeral thing, designed for immediate gratification, only to be discarded when the maggots appear, we are unable to treat it as such.

Consequently, it's very pleasing to be able to say that We Carry On is something of a classic. Chilly, stark and emotionally fraught, it's an overwhelming soundscape that delivers the musical goods time after time. You will like this one. The grave is an equally fine, and far less of a lonely place with Portishead.

Diff'rent strokes, I guess. I found this track really annoying. I can understand how people might like it if they've previously done a hit of E, but in those circumstances, I've known people to enjoy bus shelters. Given prior performances, I think Portishead have a lot of nerve to release such lazy guff.

actually, if silver apples had toured with the cocteau twins circa 'garlands', and there had been an on stage end-of-show 'c'moneverybody join in!' type get together, this would be it.
