Hala Strana - Brickwork and Scoria
Sometimes it's better to stick with what's closest to hand. Hala Strana is one of the musical faces of multi-instrumentalist Steven R. Smith. Under that name, he explores the musical idioms and instrumentation of eastern Europe. However, the best track on Hala Strana's eponymous debut album does nothing of the sort. Brickwork and Scoria is a twangy, slack-stringed composition that reeks of the American west. It's the music of ghost towns in the desert, abandoned mines and peeling wooden signs. There's something of the moodier elements of Leo Kottke in Smith's playing and that's no bad thing at all.
