Torche - Triumph of Venus
Here's a scenario for you: like all intelligent people, you like a bit of the old sludge metal. The trouble is, you have a busy life. It's not so easy to find the time to listen to a 20 minute Boris powerdrone as it used to be. What you need is something that can be listened to in smaller doses. What you need, in other words, is Torche.
Now I'm not saying that this is a perfect solution. At times Torche do have a depressing habit of delving into the world of tunes. Much of their 2008 album, the magnificently titled Meanderthal does run the risk of sounding decidedly popular. However, when they get the balance right, their sandblasted exultant electric roar is a fantastic sound. Here's the opening track, Triumph of Venus. Seldom has 104 seconds of music sounded so spacious.
