Burnt Friedman & Jaki Liebezeit - Obscured by 5

Somewhere along the line, German producer Bernd Friedmann picked up enough English to realise that there was a truly abysmal English language pun to be made using his name. Most people would have left it that, but no, he had to become Burnt Friedman. There have been better decisions.

One of those was to work with Jaki Liebezeit. Friedman collaborated with the Can drummer over four albums in the Secret Rhythms series. Obscured by 5 is from the first, released in 2002. Friedman is savvy enough to know that Liebezeit is going to be his metronomic behemoth self, and thus allows himself to use a whole bunch of sounds that don't mesh rhythmically in any simple manner. Rather there's a continual phasing going on, an ever-shifting highlight. It's bright and alive - the bass maybe a little too much so - and you can forgive it its many world music borrowings for the perfection of its construction. If you find yourself enjoying this, check out the 13 minute extended version on some copies of Playing Secret Rhythms.
