Laurie Anderson - Slip Away
To some people, Laurie Anderson is all media studies and performance art; intellectual, detached, clever, and not to be trusted. Interesting, that. Think back to your childhood, if you can. Think back and see if you remember the first time someone asked you if you thought you were being clever. I hope it never scarred you. I hope it never stopped you thinking for yourself. I hope you never stopped being clever.
Anyway, Laurie Anderson is may be all of those things (except for the not to be trusted part), but she's clearly also a lot more. Slip Away is taken from what is still her most recent studio album, the 2001 release Life on a String. In it, she sings with a quiet tenderness about the death of her father. And she is the clever one, so those can't be tears. It must just be something in her eye.
This is one of my favourite songs.
