Stuart Dempster - Secret Currents
Today's track is for all lovers of huge reverb. Stuart Dempster's Underground Overlays from the Cistern Chapel is an album of recordings made inside a 2 million gallon water tank, buried beneath the earth in Washington state. If my calculations are correct, that's the equivalent of a cube approximately 20m on each side. Or, if you assume a 3m ceiling, that's a 50m x 50m floor. I don't know the dimensions of these things. Either way, it's massive, and the acoustics manage to completely transform any sound made in there.
Secret Currents is played on trombones, instruments that, while warm, sound mysterious at the best of times. On this recording they fill the air with a slowly drifting radiance. There's no brassy rasp, just a distant and all-embracing glory. It's real choir of angels stuff. You probably require headphones to get the full effect of this music, to properly locate yourself inside this performance space, but even without them Secret Currents is recommended to theists and atheists alike.
