Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)
Is Neil Young a guilty pleasure or not? Damned if I know these days, but I still like to roll out stuff like Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black) every now and then. This is that classic old bit of rock'n'roll nonsense about it being better to burn out than to fade away, which is frankly a bit of an embarrassing statement to make at any age. This is from the 1991 live album Weld. He was not a young man at the time.
Still, that's pretty much irrelevant; what really makes this such a great track is the amazing guitar sound. It's pretty much the single crunchiest noise ever recorded - imagine a boot full of crisps stepping into virgin snow choking its way through an overdrive pedal and laced with feedback. Which, for all I know, may have been precisely how it was made.
