Israel Kamakawiwo'ole - Hawai'i '78
So I guess this must be ukulele week.
If it is, it would be a bit on the disingenuous side to not include some actual Hawai'ian music. So here he is, the biggest star of Hawai'ian ukulele. Literally. Israel "Iz" Kamakawiwo'ole weighed over 700lbs towards the end of his life, yet even then he managed to keep his beautiful falsetto. A fair amount of his recorded work, sadly, is a bit on the showbiz schmaltzy side of things. The haunting Hawai'i '78 is anything but. While the lyrics are unpalatably sentimental and nationalistic, the music itself is quite gorgeous. Too gorgeous for some tastes, no doubt, but still certainly worth a listen.
