Jake Shimabukuro - While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Rounding off ukulele week, here's one of YouTube's better-known treasures. Jake Shimabukuro's performance of While My Guitar Gently Weeps has had close on 3 million views. It's in no danger of breaking any most-watched lists, but extrapolating from the appalling inanity of the typical YouTube commentator, that's not necessarily a bad thing. Still, it was enough to get Shimabukuro's records better distribution.

The music is delightful and the playing is virtuosic. Even so, I can't help but feel that this is all rather hollow, surface flash with little substance. It's an éclair that someone has forgotten to fill full of whipped cream, but is so well presented that it still gets photographed for the restaurant's illustrated menu. If you want to just look at pictures of cakes, this makes for very fine viewing. Perhaps I'm too negative: it's not as if I don't enjoy this, it's just that I think rather less of myself for doing so.

The moral of this? Despite what the adverts may tell us, the only guilt-free cakes are the full-fat ones. Words to live by, my friends.
