Stiff Little Fingers - Suspect Device
While I'm still on my punk kick, I thought I should really include this. It's from their terrific 1979 debut album, Inflammable Material. Suspect Device is one of the rare political songs that has actually improved with age. These days, it's not just the British army in Northern Ireland who suspect everyone to be a bomb-toting terrorist. Lines such as "They take away our freedom/ In the name of liberty" can now be understood by a far wider audience than when they were originally written.
Am I suggesting that this track become the new anthem of all modern malcontents? On the minus side, Jake Burns released an awful lot of dodgy stuff after his initial success. However, in its favour, it's a punchy tune with a great singalong chorus. It's certainly a damn sight better than The Internationale, that's for sure, and perhaps it's time for it to take its rightful place alongside This Land is Our Land.
