Melissa Madden Gray - Heart Murmur
I used to own a 7" single that had been pressed by a drug company as a promotional freebie. It was a collection of recordings of different irregularities of the heart - very useful if you need to know your systolic from your disystolic and all that. As I didn't, I'm at a loss to identify the precise sounds that introduce Melissa Madden Gray's extended vocal performance. It's a fleshy, breathy track from the appropriately titled compilation album Blood, Muscle & Air: The Intimate Voice, released last year. She also does a neat impersonation of an old-fashioned whistling kettle, and even throws in a bit of a tune to keep everyone happy. All flippancy aside, this is great stuff. It may not bring any new converts to the world of extended vocal performance, but if you like this sort of thing, you'll like this.
