Marianne Nowottny - Ashphalt Euphoria
I'm really unsure what to make of Marianne Nowottny. Is her music confusing, or simply confused? Is it an exciting new avenue in music of is it just typical teen bedroom experimentalism? Does she have something to say, or is this strange for strangeness' sake? Would anyone care if she wasn't tall, confident and good looking?
Ashphalt Euphoria is taken from her debut album, Afraid of Me, recorded in 1999 when she was just 16 years old. I like it. I don't sense any of the sophistication that others have seen in her music - it's more attuned to fashion than it is to art. But it's certainly interesting stuff. Or at least, very odd indeed. Nowottny's music is like nothing else, an OTT avant-garde pop cabaret performance over a simple home keyboard. Whether it's any more than empty pretension is open for debate. I guess that makes her controversial. Good.
