Sonic Youth - Eric's Trip (demo)
I've never seen Andy Warhol's Chelsea Girls, and I suspect I never shall. My interest in Warhol suffered a huge blow when I attempted to read a, a Novel, an experience I wholehearted recommend all my friends to avoid. If you think that you'd be interested in an unedited transcript of 24 hours of taped conversations by some banal and rather dim people, then go ahead, be my guest. I can understand the allure. But the sad fact is that it's not just shit, it's dull shit. As primary source material for biographers, it's worth picking over. Otherwise, avoid like the plague.

Apparently, there's a scene in Chelsea Girls in which Eric Emerson takes LSD, which I find rather disappointing. Disappointing because I never expected Sonic Youth's Eric's Trip to have quite such a literal origin, and I am conventional enough to still consider Daydream Nation to be one of the greatest albums of all time. Here's Lee Ranaldo's original home recorded demo of the song. Stripped of the pyrotechnics of the album version, I imagine it is closer to the wide-eyed and naïve vulnerability of the Factory source. And that's interesting, I think.
