Nico - The End
Everyone knows The End. It's overblown and daft, and Jim Morrison howls like a man with caustic lye in his pants while waffling on about lizards. I loved it as a teenager, as is right and proper. Having a bit of history with this song makes Nico's cover version all the more delicious.

This is taken from the live album June 1st 1974. There's minimal instrumentation, just Nico on harmonium and Eno on synths. It's all very flat and very bleak - and so is her voice. This is one of the greatest tone-deaf performances ever. Nico makes not actually being able to sing into a virtue. For the most part, she copies Morrison's pattern of intonation, but the disinterested nature of her voice is what tips this over from melodrama into nihilism. Imperfect in both thought and deed, this still manages to be an amazing and chilling piece of music.
