Captain Beefheart - Kandy Korn
Recorded in 1967, the Mirror Man album took four years to see the light of day. It's the Magic Band at their bluesiest, sounding like a cheap transistor radio tuned into the ravings of some clubfooted Delta prodigy. It's not as out there as some Beefheart's seminal 1970s recordings, but the seeds of his mutant blues/rock/jazz style are all in here. I love John French's drumming on Kandy Korn, the way he crashes and rolls the rhythm, creating a rocky bed for the rest of the band to stumble over. While it's essentially a jam, and as such doesn't really go anywhere, it's still bursting with raw, primal proto-music.

Kandy Korn is one of my personal favourites. It does sound like a jam, but I don't think you can really call it one since the band learned to play it note-for-note, and there's some definite progression going on in there. I have a recording from John Peel's radio show of a performance of this track - and it is note-for-note the same (more or less!).
