Happy Flowers - I Said I Wanna Watch Cartoons

Shock tactics in music: sometimes they just don't work. Take Genesis P-Orridge, for instance. The man has has become an institution. He could stage a show where his skin was flayed from his body, while he shat into the mouth of a transsexual in a hijab accompanied by a soundtrack recorded inside a factory farm, and most people would merely go, "Aw, bless. It's Gen."

Not so Happy Flowers. The delightful duo of Mr. Anus and Mr. Horribly-Charred Infant have taken a more visceral route into the soundscape of shock. A grinding, droning backdrop is peppered with the screams of incoherent childhood rage. It's a uniquely uncomfortable experience, this juxtaposition between noise and fury. I think it's because Happy Flowers are so easy to identify with: we all know what it's like to be a screaming child. It's hardly esoteric.

As far as I can tell I Said I Wanna Watch Cartoons, from their 1989 album Oof, follows the formula for most of their songs. As such, I've not delved as deeply into the catalogue of Happy Flowers as I might. There's only so much of this it's possible to take. Sometimes, however, it's good to be reminded.
