John Cale - Hallelujah

That was unexpected. 60 downloads in one day. At this rate I'd go through my monthly download limit in under 3 days. So it's back to using my ISP's hosting facilities; while they only have minimal disk space, they seem to offer unlimited downloads.

It's probably that more people have heard this version of Hallelujah than any other. That's because it was featured on the soundtrack to yet another CGI cartoon full of inane pop culture references[info]beaupepys). For some reason, the soundtrack album replaced Cale's version with a sadly inane performance by Rufus Wainwright. Typical anti-Welsh bias, if you ask me.

Cale's piano playing is just a little bit too monotonous here. However, the track is saved by his singing. If ever a track was suited for his voice, it's this one. He sounds wounded, yet still sings with dignity, like a great stag evading a pack of chinless huntsmen. He has a natural authority and makes the words utterly believable.

Only two more days left to go in Hallelujah Week!

how can there only be 2 days left? there are about 50 versions of this song! have you heard the Willie Nelson version?

And stop using "inane"; you sound like a haughty, pouty college poetry student. If pop culture references are inherently inane (which they are not, and Shrek did a good job of weaving them into the Fairytale environment), then using the word is unnecessary.

And Rufus Wainwright's version is not "inane." It may be insipid or banal (but it isn't, he brings out a beauty in the music and lyrics), but it isn't inane.

Well there's me told off.

I've accumulated far more versions of this song than I care to mention, though nowhere near 50. But a week of this is all I can take right now, thank you. I've got the itch for something different.

UseNet creeps into LiveJournal.

The Blogosphere is usually like a friendly country club, UseNet a nasty, run-down corner bar.

Dreadfully sorry, let me buy you another one.

Giving people some free music with commentary deserves the worst treatment one can muster up.

Hosting aint free for most people (like me) and going through the trouble of rustling around a music collection to do a theme week takes some time, let alone uploading and doing the html. I do it because I want to share music that inspires me.

This is what people usualy say: black & blue
