John Cale - Hallelujah
That was unexpected. 60 downloads in one day. At this rate I'd go through my monthly download limit in under 3 days. So it's back to using my ISP's hosting facilities; while they only have minimal disk space, they seem to offer unlimited downloads.
It's probably that more people have heard this version of Hallelujah than any other. That's because it was featured on the soundtrack to yet another CGI cartoon full of inane pop culture references (©
beaupepys). For some reason, the soundtrack album replaced Cale's version with a sadly inane performance by Rufus Wainwright. Typical anti-Welsh bias, if you ask me.
Cale's piano playing is just a little bit too monotonous here. However, the track is saved by his singing. If ever a track was suited for his voice, it's this one. He sounds wounded, yet still sings with dignity, like a great stag evading a pack of chinless huntsmen. He has a natural authority and makes the words utterly believable.
Only two more days left to go in Hallelujah Week!
