Enrique Morente - Aleluja
Time to be grateful for the presence of Wikipedia. Without it, I'd have no idea who the flamenco singer Enrique Morente is, nor would I know that this version of Hallelujah comes from his most controversial, most experimental album. This says far more about the rigours of the tradition than it does about this song, however. To these ears, it sounds like perfectly ordinary flamenco, but with a little bit of Cohen on the side. Actually, I don't think it handles the transitions between flamenco verse and huge choral rock ballad chorus terribly well. "It sounds like Bon Jovi," remarked
beaupepys, and while I wouldn't go that far (largely because I'm lucky enough to not really know what Bon Jovi sound like) I can certainly see her point. Still, a fascinating artifact.
