From the first moment of Exception to the Rule with the sound of drums all around your ears you can tell that this is going to be an excellent recording. Escreet is a British pianist who has relocated to New York to play jazz. I know, what can you say? Anyway, the good news is that he's playing some storming music, and his latest album which was released last month. The intricate way in which Escreet's piano swirls around the scales and the stereo field on this, the title track, shows just why people are comparing him to Cecil Taylor. There's some noir-ish walking bass and some very disciplined blowing from David Binney on sax. Sounds very tight composed indeed, despite all of the wildness going on. I'd love to hear a bit of genuine abandon and some truly hard-edged sounds here, but I can't deny the excitement this provides.
