The American rediscovery of electronic music has had some interesting side effects. One of these is the new wave of artists who seem keen to learn their craft from first principles. There are a bunch of musicians experimenting with raw sound. It's not the first time this has been done, of course. There are a lot of similarities between this new wave of artists and early electro-industrial groups such as Portion Control and Bourbonese Qualk a generation ago.
M Geddes Gengras is one of these. Untitled wouldn't sound out of place on the seminal compilation Elephant Table Album. It sounds as if a modular synth had been left alone in a room, and left to its own devices. But it's also as something familiar is trying to emerge from the electronics. Maybe not the birth of a new music but I still want to hear what comes next.
