Talking Heads - Life During Wartime
It's always difficult having your preconceptions fundamentally challenged. Here at Doklands, Life During Wartime is one of a small handful of songs that are universally revered and loved. It's a classic, perfect in almost every detail, and all the children of the world recognise it as such. Except, as
beaupepys is wont to remind me, there are still some dark corners of the world where this basic truism is not yet accepted. How can we not fail to feel compassion for those people?
Life During Wartime is the musical highlight of what is probably Talking Heads' finest album, 1979's Fear of Music. Even in the midst of a crippling civil war, it tells of the power of music to still be a subversive, vital force. Well, as near as I can tell, it does. Nobody ever accused David Byrne of not obfuscating things enough.
As a sidenote, you know how you should never believe anything you read on the internet? The internet says that the congas on this track are played by Ari Up of The Slits, and actor Gene Wilder. No, seriously. Lots of people believe this shit. I'll believe it when I see photos of the recording session, and Bob Holness finally 'fesses up about Baker Street.
