Joey Ramone - The Wonderful Widow of Eighteen Springs
Yeah, that's what I thought. Joey Ramone? Bless his dead little cotton socks, but what's he doing singing John Cage? This is taken from an album called Caged/Uncaged: A Rock/Experimental Homage to John Cage, compiled by John Cale. It was released to coincide with an retrospective of Cage's work at the 1993 Venice Biennale. It's filled with the people you love, such as Eugene Chadbourne, Debbie Harry, David Byrne, Ann Magnuson, John Zorn, Jello Biafra and Lee Ranaldo.
Joey's voice is a huge, resonant nasal sneer. It seems almost entirely devoid of inflection. So why does this sound so good? Well duh, because it's Joey Ramone, dumbass. He made a career of out of sounding good while appearing to do as little as possible. He cheats a little, mostly by having the percussion done on drums rather than on a closed piano, but this is still an absolutely brilliant piece. And it's Joey Ramone! Doing John Cage! How can than not be a thing of beauty and wonder?
