Jackie Mittoo & The Soul Brothers - Chicken and Booze

Jackie Mittoo was the keyboard player from the legendary Skatalites. After they broke up in 1965 most of the members went on to become The Soul Brothers and act as the in house band at Studio One. Chicken and Booze dates to 1967 and comes from Carib Soul, one of the two albums they released that year. Perhaps not an instant classic in the way Guns of Navarone was, but the slowed down beat and looser feel gives the brass section a bit more space for self-expression. It pays off too. Mittoo's piano is maybe a little bit too honky tonk for me, but this is a great group recording, and of much better sound quality than many from that time.
