Assagai was a short lived band formed by Louis Moholo, Mongezi Feza and Dudu Pukwana during their exile in London. They brought together the hard playing of free jazz and the joy of township jive and their two albums, both released in 1971, are well worth investigating. Beka comes from the first of those, titled simply Assagai. It's got real mbaqanga feel where it sounds as if everyone's ever so slightly confused and playing either side of the beat and then there's these great stabs that staple everyone back together. Sublime Afro-rock and that unstoppable Moholo beat defies all belief.
