Soundwalk Collective with Patti Smith - Ivry

Here at Doklands we're really enjoying The Peyote Dance, the new album by the Soundwalk Collective with guest vocalist Patti Smith. Using drum, violin and processed field recordings they evoke the spirit of the Mexican desert while Smith recites and sings passages from Antonin Artaud's drug diaries. Very much our bag.

Ivry is the album's exception. The hallucinogenic indulgences are put aside, everyone sits aroung the campfire and someone gets out an acoustic guitar. Where they'd been hiding it all these miles nobody knows. The drummers have spent so many hours on horseback that the only beat they can now play is a slow clopping, but it doesn't matter. And Patti with her weary gravel voice sings a lullaby about the death of Artaud. It's genuine and emotionally complicated, and totally respectful of all the ritual that has got us to this place. A very special moment.
