Eli Keszler - Simple Act Of Inverting The Episode

It's been years since we've had anything by experimental percussionist Eli Keszler on Doklands. Sometimes he lets loose a small team of mechanical devices to play games with his drum skins, sometimes he scrapes industrial sculptures into unforgiving life, sometimes he dredges up shipwrecked grooves from the ocean floor. Simple Act Of Inverting The Episode from his 2018 album Stadium is definitely from the tricksier end of his repertoire - it's filled with shuffling taps and hand patterns as ferocious and explosive as anything you'd hear in experimental jazz-influenced electronica. And yet yet the sparse melodic material is from a much friendlier planet, even if it isn't as much smooth as it is ambient. So you'd be forgiving for thinking at least - there are a couple of places where Keszler unleashes just the right note at the right moment and you're left astounded as to where this structure you hadn't heard until that instant had come from.
