Einstürzende Neubauten - Gier

Here's a historic moment for you. This recording of Gier is the first thing that Einstürzende Neubauten ever performed live. It's taken from a tape of their debut performance at the Moon Club in Berlin in 1980. It's interesting to think of the band they might have become, given what can be heard here. They were still a mighty industrial behemoth (although Unruh's drums are largely inaudible), full of slack strings and ear-splitting feedback. But the most important difference is the presence of Gudrun Gut on synths, who give a no-holds barred onslaught of the sort of electronic sounds that have been lost to the ages. She's in full sound effects mode here, barely touching anything that could be described as a musical note. A great noise performance, and much as I love the sheet metal banging that was to come, I can't help but think they might have been an even better band had she have stayed.
